When I quit D3 I had a para 100 dh on eu hc, my char was one of the top dh on diabloprogress. I had close to 2B gold while on jsp ppl payed for gold per million.
I didn't convert my gold to fg, I didn't even sell my gear when I quit. My dh had nat ring I got offered 800M for and other gear I could easily have sold.
If I cared about jsp currency I would have sold the 2B gold and all the gear but I just quit and uninstalled, never looked back.

I am as legit as they come, never touched third party progs, never bought jsp currency. Note that I played D3 HC, meaning I never touched RMAH. My gear was self found mostly and trades from gold AH with self farmed gold.

Get real, trading is awesome. In diablo with all that class restricted gear, what you gonna do with gear you find useless for your character? --> trade it for something useful --> player interaction and decision making --> progression
