Its drop rarity and the offer & demand idea sure have a role in its price but what we're looking at here is its utility.
It was unique in its genre before this league because that was the only way (other than warding flasks) to get curse immunity, which is clearly not the case anymore.
This is what is meant by "ruining" the item.
If another item (or even gem) gave 20s of rare monsters' buffs, headhunter would be ruined. No rocket science here!
