Let me start by stating I'm fairly shit when it comes to understanding computers. From what I've heard, I'd see a significant improvement in my game play with an increase in fps. I'd like to hit 144 fps in fortnite. I currently have the following which is obviously not cutting it:

AMD FX-8320E processor
8gb ram
64 bit windows 10
amd radeon (TM) R9 270

Guess I should also mention:
I run 3 monitors for my day trading
I've been told trading platforms aren't as harsh on a computer than gaming is (but honestly have no idea)

Whats the PC going to cost me and what would you recommend?

Appreciate the help

I am going to assume that you mean 120fps? Or possibly the "Unlimited" setting?

Firstly, are you going to need a monitor for this build? I ask because unless you have a 144Hz monitor you may as well not bother.
Secondly, will you need the OS?
Thirdly, will you be doing anything other than Fortnite?

All that not being taken into account, a decent machine can be built on a 1K budget, but not if you are in a rush to build as a lot of times it's a matter of doing sale shopping and taking advantage of promotions.
If you would like my minimal suggestions, I would say this:

CPU AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor $308.99 @ Amazon
Motherboard Gigabyte - B450 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard $115.06 @ Newegg
Memory Corsair - Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $239.99 @ Amazon
Storage Samsung - 970 Pro 512 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $167.99 @ Amazon
Video Card MSI - GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB GAMING Z Video Card $389.99 @ Newegg
Case Corsair - 300R ATX Mid Tower Case - 79.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply Thermaltake - TR2 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply - 94.99 @ Newegg

There is plenty of room for improvement but this would get the job done.

From the research I've done/what I've read, this is what I expected. I guess I'm just shocked that my current PC is like 3-4 years old and seems to get over 100 fps in fortnite. Is price worth it for the increase in FPS?

is 120 fps the max on PC? I thought it was more. I will be purchasing another monitor once I upgrade the PC so will be purchasing a 144hz monitor

should have also mentioned:
I run 3 monitors for my day trading

Can someone also explain the difference in cpu's between intel and amd? Someone was telling me that I should go with intel instead for my next build

Who ever told you this should be drug out into a field and shot...ok maybe not that drastic but you should wag your finger at them very hard.

EVERYTHING a computer does is labor intensive. Just because program A says it only uses X resources, your computer is going to throw everything it has at it because it doesn't know any better. There are all kinds of ways to monitor and control how your computer handles different tasks but the basic premise is that 90% of the population operates on the default config, and changing the default can seriously hamper other aspects so you should only do it if you know what you are doing.

Now as for your question about the different processors, the short answer is "Nowadays, nothing!" Long answer is basically asking the difference between Men and Women...I don't have enough time to explain it all.

Good article. thank you very much for your help thus far.

I guess I need to figure out how big of a difference jumping from ~75 fps to ~144 fps would be as it's going to cost me approx $1200-1500 in total from the sounds of it.

what are your settings at?

if you lower them you can see what the difference in smoothness would be, once you get your 144hz monitor of course. any fps above the refresh rate of your monitor you cant see
