8400 is faster in games that dont scale to more than 4 threads. That bring said, people generally dont buy x370 for an 8400 so they can't run memory past 2666. Most newer games have better thread scaling, so having 8+ threads available is really nice, especially if you do anything in the background (ie streaming). There are plenty benchmarks out there tho where a r5 2600 @ 4.2ghz with 3.2ghz memory out performs. Just involves overclocking which still intimidates some people.

proof? graphs i saw had them breaking even with the 2600 at stock with only 2933 ram, with oc and fast ram the 8400 fell behind by 10% or more...

you are changing variables here
and saying devs arent lazy many newer games are losing to 8400 too
overclockers are <5% ez too

white build just over 1k... u can probably make it cheaper tho, if u dont choose the white components

Wife will approve the over budget if it look good and fit with the living room style and color :)

not to mention slower ram. Doesn't take much tweaking to match the 8400 even with a completely unrealistic gpu like the 1080 ti. With his 1060 fps will be the exact same and the only difference will be that he's paying $75 more for a pc that will become obsolete sooner due to less threads and no socket support.

looks like 8400 is winning to me considering op stated no overclocking
if you can convince him to oc but op post says no
its like I'm repeating myself on this numerous times lol

even without overclocking it's not gonna win. he's gonna have a 1060.

Really not sure what point you're trying to make here...
I said an overclocked 2600 will beat an 8400, you asked for proof, I provided. Nowhere was this in reference to OP's post, but a response to DCSS's question.

Also, like DCSS said, a 1060 will generally bottleneck either of those cpu's, but the AMD system is significantly cheaper, hence why I generally opt for that in my build recommendations.
To back that point, my 1070ti FTW is still the bottleneck of my R5 1600 at even stock speeds, playing at 1440p.
