You can, they have all the formats, so depending on how much you want to "invest" you can play pauper which is the cheaper, legacy, standard, modern, vintage or whatever. I like mtgo just because it is more of an investment and my cards have real world value there.

What I do is just throw $50 or $100 once in a while when I have some extra cash, and keep building up my cards.

Then if you get bored on mtgo you can always go play arena for free, but I wouldn't put money into arena.

Arena is great for noobs, but if you want to emulate the actual card game go with mtgo.

Maybe you could do arena to learn the basics and play for free, but it doesn't hold a candle to the actual card game or mtgo.

MTG is normally 3 rounds with a 15 card sideboard, so you can bring in cards to deal with your opponents deck, on mtga you just play one game.

There is no chatting on mtga, there is no trading on mtga, and any money you spend on mtga is gone for good.

MTGO you can trade, chat, have a friends list, buy specific cards etc . . but it costs a lot more, but you can actually sell your tickets to a card site and get some money back if you ever wanted to. So mtgo is also an investment as well as a game.

MTGO has a market where prices of cards go up and down, like crypto's or the stock market, so that is another element to mtgo.

TLDR; for casual / budget players and noobs probably go mtga. If you want to play the more competitive scene go with mtgo.

What are you talking about?

There's bo3 and sideboards in mtga. I'd like a chat function and trade function. Wildcards are great but I often run out trying out different things and would like the option to be able to trade.

I'm fairly certain they will implement chat, friends lists and other things. It's in a beta state.

Have you even played mtga past the intro games and quick play?

Sure I have, I have a mono-red deck built. I played it in closed beta too. When you play ladder or constructed tournaments, I have never seen a best of 3 option, nor does the deck creator give you the option to make a sideboard that I have seen.

Well I'm not sure the last time you played but it's certainly been introduced since so that is no longer an argument.

You should probably play competitive constructed. Not to mention even draft has a sideboard.

It's Ike you either played many months ago once or never actually played much at all.

Where is that option for constructed tournaments?

I'm not where near a computer right now. I'm confident you can find it.

Another Pro to playing MTGO is that you can actually win cash, via selling your treasure tokens for tickets and selling the tickets for cash.

The monetary system in general is better for mtgo.

I wouldn't be supprised if they try to move some of it to mtga. It would be wise for them to do so.

That could not come soon enough for mtga

True. I'd also note that mtga also has revolving game modes. Right now that charity one is going but prior I think it was m 19 draft and m 19 competitive draft, bo3 with sideboard. Not sure the rotation timing but it's a good idea none the less.

I think competitive and non competitive rotated too but it was a entry fee change only. Can't remember.
