Even though my classic CD key redeemed at the Blizzard entertainment site according to them it wasn't any good. So, I did the registry clean, uninstalled D2, did a registry clean, reinstalled with the new CD key and eventually got back on.

Glad to hear you’re back on. I think the new key is what ultimately fixed the problem for ya.
