Word on the street is that Manny Machado is about to be OUT of the AL East and is headed to the Phillies on Wednesday. Per Barstool Sports, it’s a handshake agreement as of now.

He's expected to represent the Orioles in the ASG, but will be traded shortly after.

Except the Phillies have the 8th lowest payroll ($112M) in major league baseball right now, despite being a top 5 market. Yet they're sitting in first place.

In a nutshell, they've been "rebuilding" and maintaining a low payroll in the process but are ready to back the brinks truck up to a superstar or two that they see worthy when they're ready to compete (i.e. Machado, Harper) which is fast approaching now. As we all know, the Phillies can absolutely afford to unload a massive payroll (i.e. their near $200M payroll that they maintained from 2010 - 2014).

So yeah, giving Machado the massive contract he wants won't be an issue. Nor will it be an issue for Harper.

But just because you have the money to sign him doesn’t mean he wants to play there. Especially when both players you listed (Machado and Harper) want to play for the Cubs
