So after watching a number of speed running videos and seeing Mr Llama's holy grail attempt, I decided to start playing on single player. I played some D2 last year around September on USEast ladder and it only took me a few days to get an Enigma because of trading, so I've been thinking it would be more fulfilling to just play single player and find everything myself. So I've been playing a sorc for a couple of days with the Pluggy mod. I have yet to find a Shako, Occy, I have a spirit sword but no shield. This is the first time I've killed D-Clone.

So anyway when playing Pluggy in hell mode every so often you see notifications about how SOJs are being sold, well sure enough today Diablo walked the Earth and I was completely unprepared, but I did save basically one of every unique or set I found. I was unsure if I would be able to kill him with my +6-7 to skills. I spent hours trying to figure out a way to beat him, failed again and again. Eventually I settled on a very tedious strategy. My merc always died almost instantly so he was useless.

So what I decided I would do was get some crushing blow, try to get enough AR to hit him at a decent rate and then try to be durable enough to survive hand to hand combat with him and then grind him down. It being pluggy I could respec an unlimited number of times at will. I'm level 77 So I maxed out energy shield, telekinesis, enchant and warmth with a point in frozen armor and fire mastery. The enchant was just to boost my AR and everything else was to make me more durable.

This worked but I also needed prevent monster heal, so before I would leave the fight to go back to town to get some pots and when I got back I would use a runeword Edge bow I made for gambling to shoot him and once I could see him turn green from poison I knew the prevent monster heal had been triggered. While I had this bow equipped I was very vulnerable but it worked. Also I completely relied on CB so life steal was totally ineffective.

As for my gear here's what I used:
Helm: Tal Rasha's
Rings and Ammy: Angelic (for the AR bonus)
Armor: Rattlecage (25% crushing blow)
Weapon: Wizard spike (for the resists and attack speed).
Shield: Rhyme(the can not be frozen was crucial).
switch: runeword Edge bow(for the prevent monster heal).
Belt: IK belt
Gloves: Orphan's Call (IAS and AR)
Boots: Goblin Toe (25% crushing blow)
I had some resists and AR from my charms.

I died so many times during this fight, I also ran out of Tp's a couple of times and even ran out of arrows once but eventually I wore him down with the crushing blow. I literally stabbed him to death with a wizard spike.

I actually had a life tap wand and tried that. The merc would just get wrecked. I tried giving him the rattlecage, he just couldn't survive long enough.

Enchant him with lvl 21 Enchant from Demon Limb. That gives a huge boost to AR and he will hit more often.

Guardian Angel and making sure he has 90% all res will help him survive. A good weapon is essential.

Diablo Clone should use zeal, have all auras on lvl 20, use decrepify and be immune to crushing blow.

1 point firewall (or Meteor) also do the job very fine, to prevent him from regenerating.
Then shop a Lower res wand to do real damage against him, and simply use your regular skill attack.
