Shimano reel on ugly stick, 12 pound braid.
I'd use a stella reel.

I am in australia, barra and Jack's here can break you off on 100 pound gear.
12 is for light fishing.
In the states I used 6lb but I got snapped by some channel catfish and big pike.

For $100 budget I'd get a rod from Ugly Stik or Okuma. And a reel from Diawa, Okuma, Pflueger, or Shimano*. Shimano makes good reels but their cheaper models are not so good. I'd spend at least $40 on the reel, or $60+ if you want a Shimano.

For line I like Maxima Ultragreen if you want monofilament. My favorite braid is Trilene Braid Professional Grade.
For hooks I prefer Gamakatsu or Mustad.
For baits and lures... there is a ton of options and some can be pretty expensive to use. One of the more affordable options is soft plastic baits that look like worms or frogs.

Ah yeah gotta have steel leads for those guys, and let the fish tire itself out. No rush to reel em in, enjoy the fight.

I use as high as 50 lb braid for bass fishing. The strength is not needed for the fish but rather it's so I don't lose my $10-15 Rapala lure when it gets snagged on brush, logs, weeds, etc (the places bass like to hang out). Bass are not particularly line shy even in clear waters so you can get away with using braids.

I caught my first large mouth bass using 4lb line on an ultralight rod. But after I lost $100+ in fishing lures I wised up to the braid game.
