Rotation still blows

Phillies starting pitching:

#9 in MLB in ERA
#5 in NL in ERA
#7 in MLB in Strikeouts
#5 in NL in Strikeouts
#9 in MLB in BAA
#6 in NL in BAA

Also, they've allowed the third fewest amount of walks in the NL (only the Dodgers & Mets have allowed fewer).

Soooo....

Before the season I said if they break .500 it will be a successful season

They were regarded as a "dark horse" playoff team, which got quite a few laughs from some people around this forum. They've basically been in rebuild mode the last few years.

The fact that they are sitting 11 games over .500 on July 30th, with one of the best records in the NL and 1st place in the NL East is a major success. Even if they got bounced in the first round, just making the playoffs will be a success for this team at this point.

So Nola has single handedly produced numbers good enough to rank the Phillies starting rotation among the better rotations in the league in most major statistical categories?

Velasquez - 4 ERA
Pivetta 4.85 ERA
Eflin 3.64 ERA

We talking ERA?

Phillies team starting rotation ERA: 3.88

Which is better than 21 other teams in MLB, putting them firmly in the top 10 starting rotations in all of baseball.

I'm not complaining that much.

Aside from Nola, they're all prone to blowing up at times. But starting pitching is definitely what's carrying the Phillies this season.

It's all a crapshoot in the playoffs anyways.

I've watched the R2C2 team and seen Cliff Lee choke some big games. I've also seen Brett Myers and Joe Blanton come up big.

Just need to get hot at the right time. Sometimes scrubs like Charlie Morton somehow turn into god-like pitchers and big names like Kershaw always end up choking.

Those are solid numbers for #3-4 pitchers. Pivetta was really good at one point but he's been sucking balls lately, probably about to lose his rotation spot if the Phillies do something at the deadline or Eickhoff comes back.

Nola been doing that since high school. Scouts and locals packed the stands when he started.
