Before you do any of that though, just go to the Settings/Network Settings on your Xbox and wait for the connection information to populate on the main page. It will let you know what your current NAT setting is (Open/Moderate/Strict). Even if it's Moderate, it could be causing some connection issues to other players, but you may be able to open it with port forwarding. If it's Open already, it could be either a speed issue or a connection issue if you are remote or international like I said. If it's Strict, you're toast.
