When you have as many characters as this show has, in such a limited amount of time to develop them, it's not exactly a botched storyline.

The reason it is botched is because they introduced Dorne but didn't develop it. Oberyn is the only character from Dorne that the story actually needed. They could have gotten away with giving him a more individualized treatment and cutting out Doran and the Sand Snakes. They probably learned their lesson and that's why Septon Meribald only appeared in one episode.

He was tortured, he has a right to be scared because he knows how horrible it is.

I have no idea what I'd do in that situation and it's laughable that anyone would claim to know they'd be brave when they haven't faced anything 1/10 as fearsome.

Let alone being brutally tortured for weeks or months or however long and then facing the likelihood of going through it all again.
