Either way we traded an underachiever who can't play a lick of defense and caused multiple team issues with a subpar center on a terrible contract for a serviceable big man for a year, cap flexibility, and your favorite a first round pick.

I'd imagine the Lakers simply knew Russell had no future with them and they fielded the league to gauge his value and pulled the trigger when they got such a good offer.
