Yes, linux is free. I would recommend installing Ubuntu desktop in a virtualbox virtual machine. I'm sure you can find lots of tutorials about it online. Learning how to use the terminal can be tough but it's necessary.

What area of Cyber security are you interested in? If youre interested in becoming something like an AV (Antivirus) engineer, you need to know assembly.
Also try visiting some white-hat hacker forums
