James Buchanan just kind of sat back and let the civil war happen.

Furthermore he was an advocate for slavery and could give two shits about basic human rights.

Thing is that was so long ago we can't make comparisons. It is so far before our time.

It’s obviously impossible to compare over the centuries, but when the counter argument is “worst president? Well there might be one other guy...” I think that’s telling enough about just how much of a disaster Trump was. Rip in pieces.

So much jubilation over the Keystone project being scrapped.

Hailed as a monumental environmental victory....

Demand for oil is not going to magically go away.

Opening the door for Russia and the Middle East to produce more oil is not a victory.

They could give two shits about the environment.

Ya. And not to mention how green and carbon friendly this particular pipeline was going to be.

I’m not seeing any celebration really, even Trudeau upset about it. I guess I’m in AB and you’re in BC though. It’s probably the wrong move, but Biden had to do it, and can’t change his mind now after it was one of his first actions. The fault lies with fucking Kenney betting 1.5 billion and losing it all. What a clown. The world is moving on from oil. It wont happen tomorrow, but you’re got to get ahead of that massive shift, not whine about the good old days.

Obama had cancelled the project and it was clear Biden was going to do the same. So putting taxpayer money in a project very likely to fizzle out was very stupid no matter what way you cut it.

Either way, currently oil production exceeds pipeline capacity so exports via rail have exploded over the past two years. Environmentalists have a point that leaks in pipelines can ruin surrounding fauna/flora in isolated environments but rail leaks are a lot more likely. At the end of the day the problem is on the demand side, and given how hard it is to even make a dent on the logistics side it's pretty futile to unconditionally oppose pipelines. It's an inconvenience for US refineries at worst, who can easily procure oil elsewhere.
