Pretty much all you need to know is here http://ddowiki.com/page/Home. Most people that play DDO use that website for reference. If you want build ideas, just go to the main DDO forums. They have lots of builds there. Other than that, what do you want to know?

Don't bother with trying to play f2p, VIP if you plan on playing.

You can do without underdark, but you'll have to purchase epic destinies. That said, it's a good expansion to have mostly for level 20 gear which you'll use when you reset from 28 to 20.

As for what character to start, a bladeforged paladin is probably the most new player friendly build ever made.

VIP is not really necessary. I played for roughly 4 years and spent less than one year's subscription on the game. After about a year, I had all the quest content in the game and all races/classes except half elf and half orc. All you really need is to spend your money when things are on sale. It'll save you a ton, and you can farm DDO points on your TR lives. No real need for sub unless you just have to have everything right when it first comes available.

I would not listen to these two. Unless you plan on spending a shitload of money to unlock a lot of decent packs to start, you're better of VIPing.

If you're going to literally farm the points, you value your time less than a fucking sweatshop worker.

This is the truth.
It will cost alot to get all of the content being non vip

VIP is not even close to worth it. The only "farming" I've really done is to make sure on each of my TR lives (I've done roughly 12 of them) that I get around 3,000 favor. That's really not hard at all. You just run everything at your level once on elite, and you'll probably get at least 2.5k just leveling back to 20. Sure, it might take a little while when you first start out. But if you buy the right packs first, you can get tons of favor easy. And you just have to wait and buy stuff when it's on sale. You can get just about everything in the game from 20-50% off if you wait for sales. But if you buy a subscription, you probably value your money less than Paris Hilton does.

unless you're in one of the top 2-3 guilds expect to shell out a ton of money to be even halfway good
