Nearly had an epic fuckup when I reinstalled windows on my desktop

Backed everything up onto my external drive. Nearly deleted the partitions on said drive when selecting which drive to save windows onto, since I forgot it was still connected. Luckily I think I only deleted an unnecessary partition, since I was still able to access files (thank fucking god).
