Jose Mourinho has revealed “the truth” about his relationship with Paul Pogba.
Speaking in his press conference on Friday ahead of Manchester United’s game with Brighton on Sunday, Mourinho was eager to defuse any potential situation with the Frenchman.
Pogba has been branded a “nightmare” for his perceived poor behaviour since returning to Old Trafford, having hinted at potential unrest.
But Mourinho is adamant that he has “never been so happy” with the 25-year-old.
“The truth is we are together for two years and a couple of weeks I’ve never been so happy with him as I am now. That’s the truth,” he said.
“I cannot demand more from him, ask more from him. He came here on a Monday, he trained three days, I asked for his support, contribution in a match where we had difficulties.
“He did it, did it better and for more time than we could expect. When he says he did it for the fans and for the team it’s exactly what I want.
“It’s exactly what I demand from my players is what he’s giving me. He’s working well, playing well, he does for the fans, he does for the team , that’s what I want .
“I want him to play for the team which he is doing. I repeat, I couldn’t be happier than what I am.
“Write what you want about him. Write what you want about me. Please don’t say lies. Please don’t put him in the situation where people can think that he’s not a polite, educated guy, which he is. He’s very polite. He’s very educated. He’s never had a fight with me, never had a hard change of words.
“Everything is respected. I have no problems at all.”
Asked whether the midfielder could maintain his performance levels, Mourinho replied: “I am very confident, but if he doesn’t, that’s football.
2If his objective is to perform for the team and for the fans, he has the right to have a bad match. Everybody has a bad day. Everybody has little ups and downs in their performance level.
“Is he the captain? No, the captain is Antonio Valencia. He has the conditions to be a captain in the future. But with no Antonio in the team he was the captain, and for the next match he will be captain again, but one day when Antonio comes back, he will be captain.”
