Guide to Ladder and Non-Ladder
What is the difference? What can I do on one that I can't do on the other?Ladder1) The ladder holds a level ranking system that you can see from any Diablo II channel, located in the bottom right under where you create and join games. Here you can view who is the highest level for the current ladder season. The ladder has four sub-sections to it.
Standard Ladder
- The classic, softcore version of the ladder where there are only four Acts.
Hardcore Ladder
- The classic, hardcore version of the ladder where there are only four Acts.
Expansion Ladder
- The expansion, softcore version of the ladder where there are all five Acts.
Expansion Hardcore Ladder
- The expansion, hardcore version of the ladder where there are all five Acts.
2) The ladder resets after a given amount of time, no one knows exactly but a season has lasted anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Blizzard usually warns players 1 to 2 weeks in advance before a reset. When a reset occurs, everything that is currently on ladder is converted to non-ladder. There is no way of avoiding your characters and items from being converted.
3) One can interpret this any way he or she wants, but it is said that ladder has better drops also. So if you'd like to find more and better items, ladder is the better place to Magic Find.
4) There are certain privileges that a player gets on ladder that a non-ladder player does not. There is a list of ladder only runewords, items, and upgrades only accessible to ladder players.

Non-Ladder1) Non-Ladder never resets, characters and items will always stay on non-ladder.
2) One special thing about non-ladder is that old, pre-patch, or items that do not drop any more still exist on non-ladder in very low quantities, unlike ladder. However this is a huge reason many play ladder because richer players can obtain these items and have a significant advantage over other players. All though that is the case with everything, it is less of a problem on ladder.
