I want to test out an idea I've been spinning here lately:

Who would tune into Khabib vs Usman BEFORE his currently scheduled defence?

That is, do you think Khabib can be beaten inside of his own division right now, or would it be more compelling to see him go for glory in an absolute mega fight? I do realize that he hasn't gone through everyone in his weight class and that he can cement his legacy without fighting Usman, but I see it as the best way to challenge him. I worry that he'd get curb stomped but at the same time, I'd give him an outside chance.

Usman is a boring wrestler. Neither has cleaned out their division, no thank you.

think usmans wrestling and strength would neutralize khabibs and it would be a striking match where khabib would get tagged

yup, Usman over khabib but this fight won't happen khabib wants two more fights; gaethje and after GSP.
If we have a khabib-gsp, we will have an idea on how khabib handle a top ww

I don't think it'll happen but assuming that Khabib will roll through Gaethje, I don't see any compelling match up apart from Ferguson. And he'd crush Ferguson.

If GSP isn't too old and fat and rusty, he'll kill Khabib. I think Usman is a better match up even if it'd be kind of bleh. And I think Usman would take him out. Both GSP and Usman are a bit much for Khabib but if they don't take him seriously, they could get into trouble quickly. He's a nasty fighter.

GSP in particular was always huge at 170. He could've spent his career at 185. That's my worry for Khabib. Khabib tends to overpower people and so does GSP.

e: sometimes the problem is that you're too good for your own division but a bit too small to move up. Khabib could beat a bunch of guys at 170 but once you get to the top of the division, you're dealing with different animals. That's why superfights are so interesting. It's the whole thing where we find out who can step up and compete with the big boys, because it's a whole different world. I guess what I'm thinking is that Khabib will clear his division. Gaethje stands the best odds against him but Ferguson is the most interesting fight. Beyond that, Khabib isn't in a stacked division and to achieve GOAT status, something extraordinary needs to happen. If he wants out of the fight game, maybe a match with GSP is the best we can expect. I just really don't like that fight for Khabib if GSP is conditioned for it.

at bold. I think you have the wrong info. GSP was a small ww compared with the other fighters and that was mentioned several times. between fights, Khabib is even bigger than him.
GSP fought once at 185 and that was so hard on his body that he developed a ulcerous colitis

At 170 he had a big reach and he walked around off-season at 185-190+.
At 185 he would've had more challenges once he got over his fear of Matt Hughes.

We may need to disagree on this but my impression is that GSP was a really big 170.

GSP's reach has nothing exceptional. at 5'10, he is rather small and was most of a time the smaller guy in the cage.
The impression you have is probably because Georges is physically very strong and when the fight goes down, he was always on the top controling the action. this is based on his superior wrestling skill but physically, he is not a big ww and never was
