I'm about to buy an a5 merc. Should I get one in norm, nm, or hell? Does it make a difference? I know different difficulty a2 mercs have different auras, but I'm getting an a5 frenzy merc

D2R does not matter.

D2 LoD, the lower the difficulty, the better statistics he will have.
