Yesterday Iran launched a series of suicide drone and cruise missile strikes inside Pakistan, destroying buildings of the Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni separatist group along the Balochistani border that has launched terrorist attacks against Iran in recent years with a goal of carving out an independent Baluch region. Iran has frequently complained about them to Pakistan and threatened action in the past. Pakistan reported that the buildings hit weren't strongholds of the militants, but rather housing for their wives and families, killing two children and wounding others, and declared it an "unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran". In response, Pakistan first recalled its ambassador and suspended high level talks, then today launched a series of missile strikes targeting regions on Iran's side of the Sistan-Baluchistan border, targeting the anti-Pakistani Baloch separatist groups the Balochistan Liberation Front and Balochistan Liberation Army, whom Pakistan have previously labeled a terrorist group, but Iran doesn't.

basically they're both fucking up the balochi separatists on the opposing side of the border as escalation against each other, but not really. Of course the history of the balochs has been them killing each other with intertribal conflicts anyway. But at least the taliban doesn't give a shit

Seen news on this earlier, but from sounds of it, doesn't look like it would escalate into anything really. Neither Iran or Pakistan would benefit from this flaring up.

They both get to puff their chests and kill their common enemy balochs, but its a very serious escalation and risk of provoking a wider conflict. Easy enough for them to back away now with no serious damage, but any time countries are bombing each others mainlands its a short path to war

This also might put a damper on Iran's willingness to launch any more direct strikes in the near future like they've threatened against Israeli proxies, and stick to their houthi proxies. Pakistan showed that there will be immediate reciprocal escalation even from a country ill suited to airstrike exchanges

Moreover, Iran can't have any interest in exposing itself to a two-front war. Neither can Pakistan. Both countries' core strategic interests are much better served if they have each other's back and can focus on the enemy to their west (Iran) or east (Pakistan).
