This is the first smart thing they've done in a few years. If they get under the $233 million luxury tax (which they will if anyone takes Giolito or if a combination of the other players are grabbed) they'll get a pick for Ohtani at the end of the 2nd round rather than at the end of the 4th round.
You cannot give a qualifying offer to a player acquired midseason anymore.
