Here in my country, I think as long as two people have been living in a marriage-like situation for 2 years, the law considers them to be in a spousal relationship and they are exposed to all the associated liabilities if they want to split. Personally, I would get married and then draw up some kind of agreement to protect my assets.
That probably is a thing. He's screwed anyway since he had kids.
