Hello. Just wondering if coinbase.com is trustworthy? I signed up a while ago, however part of their verification process involved sending them government-issued IDs and documents that showed my address. I am just wondering if it's safe to hand this info over to them.

Also, I am Canadian, and I will be using my Visa to purchase bitcoin, and then send it to an American organization. Will this be possible with coinbase?

They have to collect your ID for money laundering regulations. Same as any stock broker.

If you're sending bitcoin somewhere you're probably getting scammed though.

We all know that "terrorist organization" is the government's way of calling any organization that threatens it.

Thank you to all for the replies. I just went ahead with my very first bitcoin transaction, and it went smoothly, except for one thing: I paid using my Visa, however, they apparently treat this as a cash advance, not as a regular purchase. So I might get an additional fee at the end of the month when my Visa comes due. I also immediately paid it off, because I read that they give you no grace period, they start charging you interest the minute you do a cash advance. So I learned something today.

So the government throws its weight around, arresting people just because they can, with no regards to whether it's justified.
