It started like a lot of things do in restaurants. Long shifts, late nights, inside jokes, and spending more time with your coworkers than your actual friends. We'd flirt back and forth for weeks. Everyone noticed it, even if nobody really said anything.
One night after work we all went out for drinks. One drink turned into several, people slowly headed home, and somehow it ended up being just the two of us. We talked for hours, laughed about work, complained about customers, and before I knew it we were back at her place.
That night she couldn't have made it any clearer that she wanted to be there. She was all over me from the moment we were alone. Before I left, she hugged me, kissed me, smiled, and told me she had an amazing night. She even texted me afterward saying she was really glad we finally hung out outside of work.
I walked into my next shift thinking things would be different in a good way.
Instead, it felt like I was talking to a completely different person.
She barely looked at me. Every conversation became one-word answers. If I asked her a question, she'd answer as quickly as possible and immediately find something else to do. It wasn't just in my head either. Other coworkers started asking me if everything was okay between us because they noticed how cold she had become.
The situation got even messier because her ex also worked at the restaurant.
Apparently, word got around that something happened between us. Restaurant gossip spreads faster than wildfire, and before long people were whispering whenever one of us walked by. I don't know exactly who found out first, but somehow the story made its way around the building.
A few days later my supervisor pulled me aside.
They asked if there was anything going on between me and her that they needed to know about. They mentioned there had been rumors circulating and that it was starting to create unnecessary drama on the floor.
Not long after, she got questioned too.
We both denied everything.
As far as management knew, nothing had happened. We both acted like everyone was making something out of nothing, and eventually they let it go.
But even though we lied, nothing actually got better.
Working together became incredibly awkward. We'd stand next to each other for hours and barely exchange more than a couple sentences. Meanwhile she'd laugh and joke around with everyone else like nothing had happened.
The part that confused me the most wasn't that things became awkward. I could understand that. It was how dramatically everything changed.
Just days earlier she had been telling me how much fun she had and how amazing the night was. She seemed genuinely excited that we'd finally spent time together.
Now it felt like she wanted everyone to think we barely knew each other.
I kept replaying everything in my head wondering if I missed some obvious sign, if I had done something wrong afterward, or if she simply regretted it once reality set in. Maybe it was because her ex worked there. Maybe she didn't want coworkers talking. Maybe she realized mixing dating and work wasn't worth it.
I'll probably never know.
What I do know is that restaurants have a way of turning private moments into public gossip. One decision after work somehow became everyone's business, and now every shift feels just a little more uncomfortable than the last.
It's strange how someone can tell you they had an amazing night, only for the next chapter to be nothing but short answers, forced smiles, and pretending none of it ever happened.

Because she initiated it with me when we were all out with co workers. Got too drunk, started flirting with me, didn’t have a ride so asked if I can drive her home. Made a move on me in the car and ended back up at my place. One thing led to another.

Now it’s a little awkward as we speak.
