the federal govt already has laws states need to follow in national elections, they're just very loose. i'd agree they should be expanded to have voter ID requirements, even if it's not 100% mandated what that is. some states could choose a state issued liscense card, others could allow birth certificates too or social cards, etc. hell some could even register you on site with a piece of mail with your name and address. but i think a national standard is a good idea, even if it means we need to make IDs free, they always should have been free to begin with. and im ok with some funding to transport people to get them if its too hard, or even mobile units that go to places like nursing homes to issue non-driving ID cards.

but i think the arbitrary bar of "change the outcome" isn't required. do we have fraud? yes. can we cut down on fraud in ways that don't drive down voting numbers significantly and disenfranchise too many people? yes. so is it worth doing, yes. some things require above and beyond measures to signal they are free and fair, even if they weren't tainted into total corruption anyways. i think of it like a business making sure their accounting is squeaky clean, even if they didnt have enough wrong to make an audit an issue anyways.

I think in order to be eligible to vote, they should have a high school degree or GED, and in high school they should require Politics 101 or something similar, for basic education and understanding in politics. I understand that politics isn't for everyone and that is fine, but I think that a basic understanding for politics would help people vote better, which will lead to healthier communities.

So I would vote: [X] GED or high school diploma

thats where the idea dies unfortunately. I would be 100% for this but Conservatives would never, ever let something like this happen


making people pay for an ID in order to be able to vote is illegal since it can be rightly considered a poll tax. furthermore, elections are not a federal issue they are a state issue so literally every single change OP wants to make would be impossible to implement for every state in the union short of a full on fascist takeover

I don't care if they're free or not. is this genuinely a conservative sticking point, are there particular conservative leaders saying we must make it prohibitively expensive to have an ID or something?

Why is this even a topic.

1. Citizen
2. Proof of Citizenship, Passport, National Identification Card.
3. No criminal Record or to be specific, No violent / Anti Government Criminal record ( Murder, Rape, Domestic Terrorism.)
4. If One has Dual Citizenship ... Cannot Vote.
5. Permanent Resident ( Green Card ) cannot Vote.

Having a Degree or Qualifications of any sort in our day and age no longer proof one's intelligence / capability / Domestic ( Geo ) Political Acumen.

Whatever you mentioned used to be the case (barely) 20 or 30 years back whereby decently educated citizens are slightly more capable to choose and select their representatives.

But this doesn't work in the United States since your top guy, congress etc etc make decisions that are heavily influenced by lobbies.
And in order to move , at times, solid bills or policies that will improve the lives of citizens, one party have to agree to some ridiculous BS from their opposition so that there are enough signatures to get the bill, policy , law enacted or passed.

For Example....

Republican wants to pass a Bill that Jail Pedos and trafficking of minors for life.

Democrats... sure ...... Let's add other clauses that is unrelated to the above.... Transgender get to read story books to children and promote their lifestyle at least 10 hours per week in schools and this is compulsory.

or

Democrats wants to pass a bill to improve Healthcare , Veteran care , regulate foreign lobbies etc etc

Republicans....sure Let's add an unrelated clause to the above...... Agricultural companies are now allowed to procure African, Indians and Chinese that are non American Citizens to pick cotton in the fields and sing.
Any insubordination from such " workers " can be punished by said owner in the form of tying them to a tree and lashing them with a whip not more than 30 times per week.

The above ridiculous BS is for dramatic effect and to showcase how ridiculous some of these bills are.

I don't agree with this. I do agree with faster citizenship for society contributing individuals, though.
