The flaw in the comparison is assuming every controversial opinion today is equivalent to supporting civil rights during Jim Crow. That's the very point being debated.
The point is that no one does or ever has deserved the authority to decide what others should be allowed to say. This is repression by definition, and can never lead to anything but repression.
The more precedence you set for limiting freedom of speech, the better you set up the oppressors of the future.
