I havent played classic in probably 15 years and I want to give it a go.

I logged in to both ladder and nl classic and see 0 games up, is this game still alive and people playing in hell?

If so, im down to get a leveling group or just crush

Is NL or Ladder America's more active?

neither are very active. you need to get into discord and talk to people and work together to play. its still a lot of fun, but the first couple weeks of ladder are the easiest to play.

When I CS they’re mostly priv on non ladder.

I think ladder is more active, but if you want to pvp NL is more active. You can find pub cs games on ladder. America server is active, but don’t forget to check Euro server because they also go hard. People play in hell at specific times because of kids, work, life.
