Usually they just combine totally unrelated information to give you a garbled mess that sounds like it makes sense if you also don’t know anything about the topic tho. Try asking it about Roman history, it will eventually give you information about Nero while you’re talking about Tiberius and if you don’t know you’ll just believe that the information relates to Tiberius. And then half the information is just based on reddit comments anyway. It’s scraping the bottom of the barrel and building a new low.
It’s a fkin mess, completely unreliable source of information. We used to say that about Wikipedia. Wikipedia looks great compared to this thing
Agreed, LLMs are not good, but its the story of human history that people use the worst source of information for the breadth of their information gathering. we used to go to a shaman to ask him why it hasn't rained, and he'd say its been too long since we sacrificed a newborn. we havent come that far since then on average. that's perhaps the most interesting thing about humans compared to most other animals, only a few have real intelligence, and most are complete idiots. im not sure if that's how we evolved on purpose, because a society works better with many chattel and few leaders. or if its just a happenstance genetic lottery. but id honestly be pretty terrified if we lived in the inverse with most people having a high IQ and only a few having low IQs.
