Aight, just poped a WC+3, so hell Drognan is definitely the way to go (using a lvl 96 character at least, i can't confirm under that).
All you need is a character that has the altar quest in the "ask Drognan about the strange darkness" state.
Then you use that char to attract him at the very edge of town, and you do the gambling with your main char for fast repeat.
Just be sure that the "attracter" doesn't talk to him otherwise your quest state is screwed.

I'd say way faster using the quest trick, since you don't have to wait for the red portal delay.

Play like that one guy a few months ago with all the settings turned to the bare minimum to make the game work and S/Eing, portals and waypoints etc are even faster than d2 LoD.

I doubt that shortens the Pindle portal delay by a lot, cause that delay is there for a reason.
Blizzard didn't take such measures with Drognan, at least they didn't take into account that you could put him at the town area limit, in the end you get an instant inventory reset =]

The hard coded portal delay is still there, yeah. But at least going in and out of the portal would be instant as opposed to half second load screen or whatever (the door opening load screen).
