This old game with the current hilarious load to the server is nowhere reasonable to close - the negative effect in social media will harm too much. A few bucks required to keep this going is nothing to talk about with current level of technologies

blizzard just want to make money , you forget this? close servers to make you buy d2r for 40 € . ez to understand .
for info , blizzard is the 1st company in all history who made a game that you need to pay every month to play (wow) .
you rly think they will spend money to run a server for a few players ?

for info ,ubi soft stop servers for the game "the crew" a few years ago cause there were not enough players .
they are not your friends , they make games to make money , wake up kids .

d2 is over so , need to find ng . if you want , usa still working and asia too , or you can go on many sites who gives every 2 or 3 weeks free games . like steam indiegala or epic etc ...
i wont buy a game 40€ juste for a new char and new graphics .
