when a family nickel and dimes itself spending on stupid shit the only thing that can stop it is bankruptcy and eviction. the same will go in the USA.
DOGE was poorly done, but when you saw the vitriolic response to it it became clear big players REALLY didnt want the issue looked into. zero big govt agencies can withstand an audit, they're all burning money.
I wish it worked out and we had the equivalent in Canada. And I do mean the actual concept / idea of DOGE, I felt this one was selling the concept more as a political tool than actual intentions to execute.
OftheVoid mentioned carelessness.
This is the Canadian issue. There's no incentive to actually followup or deepdive into who or what you are funding. Projects are often a sham, especially on the smaller contribution / funding agreements that are hundreds of thousands not millions, but in aggregate those add up. You toss together an annual report maybe quarterly report with some pictures and fire that off the the funders to satisfy the reporting requirements in the agreement.
Simply look at advice given online on accounting or finance forums. Want better work life balance or to not have to work as hard, go to governments. There's no bonus structure, no fast track promotions. An annual step increase in salary performing good or bad for the most part. So if you're someone in a department who has to hand out X money before March 31 with no real incentive to make sure its well spent, it wont be. Get it done and go home at 4:30. Government isn't attracting superstars here, private gobles them up with higher compensation and fast track opportunities. You look into some government departments and i've never seen such a mash up of odd bottom the barrel individuals who can't get fired.
Ive done internal audit and external audit roles in my life and its a joke.
