I actually lived with an Iranian woman for about 6 months last year and thought she was French for the first few weeks. I was very relieved to learn she was Iranian so I could have honest conversations with her, which is obviously impossible with most Europeans.

Iranian expats are an extremely biased sample set. The ones that left Iran don't like Iran. I've known some Iranian women here in Canada, including one who used education as a means to get out, who of course are not fans of the Iranian government.

Of course you are right, expats and immigrants are more likely to be critical of their home government.
