As far as oil cost China has a lot more alternative energies I think per population ..More electric cars and such.. Wont be hurt as much as a lot of countries.. Will probably effect America's middle class more then China's middle class the oil prices..

They are still affected, but they have time. They learned from the Japanese and Japan have 250 Days reserve of Oil, Gas, LNG I believe.
The reason why they went Electric has got nothing to do with saving the planet. It is to prepare for situations like what they are facing now.

They have mid term and long term plans. And it is easier for them to achieve it because it is a single party system. When you have a multiple party system, the interest of the political party.... many times...comes before their people and constituents .

That being said, if the Iran situation last more than 8 to 9 months, they will start facing visible problems.

being more energy dependent is great to prevent an uprising, but they have to ship their goods all across the globe. if fuel prices create a demand shock for their exports they cant withstand it. and they still need to farm and fish enough to feed themselves, which gets hard if fuel triples.

Their self-sufficiency rate for food has deteriorated in the 21st century and stood at a paltry 66% in 2020. So not only does China need fuel to farm and fish domestically, they also need fuel for the global shipping which supplies them with a sizable share of their food.

On the other hand, US farmers also rely on global shipping for their massive food exports, and due to being a democracy, a genuine farming crisis will pose political risks much more quickly in the US than it would in China.

Either way, I don't see this current blockade lasting much longer than 4-6 weeks max.

American mid term plans: 6 months
American long term plans: what plans where!?

Chinese mid term plans: 10 years
Chinese long term plans: 100 years

i mean, they are running on different engines.

Kind of a tangent, but i was listening to a podcast focused on agriculture and food impact arising from this war given how much of the globe's fertilizers comes through Hormuz (~20%). Speaker said that grain consumption has gone up tremendously and the reason is largely a function of much of the globe having an improved diet and eating more meat. As many poor places are lifted from poverty, one of the first things people do is start eating more meat. It takes ~7x more grain as a form of feedstock for various cattle than if that person consumed the grain directly for energy. So as much of the third world gets to even a fraction of western standards, this means overwhelming demand for grain. We haven't really seen food shortages largely due to a combination of 1. global warming making harvest seasons longer 2. improved/genetically modified seeds that yield more and 3. the use of fertilizer has led to record breaking strong harvest seasons.

I think we're likely to see very sticky inflation in food, particularly meat, even if this is resolved in 4-6 weeks IMO.
