AI psychosis, also called chatbot psychosis, is not a formal clinical diagnosis but describes cases where individuals develop or experience worsening psychotic symptoms—such as delusions, paranoia, or disorganized thinking—after interacting extensively with AI chatbots. Users may begin to attribute sentience, divine knowledge, or romantic feelings to AI systems, sometimes forming fixed false beliefs that feel real. The phenomenon is often linked to the AI’s design, which mirrors user language, validates beliefs, and encourages continued engagement, unintentionally reinforcing delusions.
