Hostilities had already been surging for weeks before the actual warfare began. Trump really increased the pressure on Iran and basically signalled "we won't tolerate you obtaining the bomb, and this time, we're dead serious about it". Iran's response to the American demands to give up their nuclear ambitions was an unambiguous "no", wrapped in some rosy diplomatic language. From that point on, they were on a collision course.
The actual outbreak was probably led by Israel; as far as I understand it, the US rushed into military action before they were fully ready because the Israelis were hell-bent on striking, so the Americans went along. But this doesn't mean that the Israelis dragged the US into this war. After Iran's insistence to stick to its nuclear program, a US strike was coming either way. I just think the Pentagon wanted to prepare a bit longer.
Now... the big question is "why now?" Why did Trump and his administration feel this sudden urge to tackle the longterm issue of Iran's nuclear ambitions specifically in early 2026? Honestly, I have no idea.
What's your opinion on all of this?
Under Obama’s nuclear deal, Iran agreed to limit enrichment, reduce uranium stockpiles, cap centrifuges, modify key reactors, and allow comprehensive IAEA inspections, effectively keeping its nuclear program peaceful. Donald Trump unilaterally broke that deal. Donald Trump then bombed Iran last year, even after his own intelligence told him that Iran was not building a bomb. He then bombed them again this year and started this war, we can both agree that it is highly likely that this was led by Israel. When you say this doesn't mean that the Israelis dragged the US into this war, my response is that that your position is inconsistent.
My position is that Israel wanted to strike Iran again, after striking Iran last year, they needed time to build up their weapons again, once they did that they were ready. They were not keen on negotiations between Trump and Iran and forced the US hand, in my opinion. We can Agree or Disagree on this, I don't care.
Next Question, if thats OK, What do you think is the US and Israel's Goal here ? This time I will state my position: the US and Israeli goal is to mow the lawn - degrade Iran's nuclear technology and military ability, i.e. not a final solution, just a delaying tactic deferring their "problem" for another few years.
