They work together. Its not "whici is best" it is a game of balance between both.

In HC it's a balance of killing speed and survivability, mf being just an added bonus.

Apparently this is the only way sunders can drop T1-T3.

To be honest, you shouldn't even worry about MF anymore when doing herald farming... You should be doing the souls ritual. Maybe even twice if you want. Having any mf just slows down kill speed, even if by 0.1 seconds per mob. No reason to have any MF at all anymore.

if MF doesnt matter on Desecrated TC... then souls rituals is a waste of time. It will only apply to T1/2/3 Heralds
Only kill speed matters here. Getting to T4/5 asap. And keep on killing some heralds till game is empty.
Souls ritual is good only in the situation where you have no shard to your name and you rarely go beyond 1 or 2 T5 heralds. Beyond that point, souls ritual is a waste of time - in regards of Sunder farming, not for the rest of the uniques -

I think in the case of herald farming, you're killing lots of elite packs already, and if you terrorize the whole act or whole game, then it makes sense to setup the soul ritual imo.

There never has been any reason for stacking MF.

It's just that most people play SC and there is nothing interesting to tinker with there.

So people maxed out their killing speed and then were lying to themselves that having ~400mf is substantially better than having ~100mf.

I believe that having 4200 mf for free using the souls ritual and then clearing the entire game terrorized or entire act, but not having to use any gear for mf is worth it. But to waste gear slots on MF is a waste imo. The free mf you get from enigma is already enough.
