The USA is 9.8m sq km. Alaska and Hawaii count, obviously.
North America is 24.7m sq km.
Australia is significantly smaller than the USA and nowhere near the size of North America.
Literally everyone with an eighth graders level of geographical knowledge thinks of Canada and Mexico when they say North America.
