Pvp definitely isn't the reason d2 has been alive for this long. 🤣
You can see the massive spikes at the start of every season and it slowly die again. If anything it's all the mods, season restarts and people on jsp working for pennies.
PvM, the story, itemization, etc... is what made D2, well.. D2. It was a game that defined a genre. But PvP was the end game, its truly the reason people kept playing years, or even decades after blizzard stopped supporting it. 20+ years later blizz was basically like "holy s**t, theres still people playing D2?! Thats amazing, we could totally make money off of this somehow." But they never asked the question of why people are still playing it 20 years later. And it sure as hell isnt because running baal 10,000+ times is fun.
