Hah! True. In Montréal, a sink hole opened a decade or so ago and an entire huge tractor fell in. Let me find it...

Why couldn't they just fill it up. A sink hole that big was trouble waiting to happen

What I understood from what was happening then was that water was carrying away soil, sand, and sediment beneath the tarred roadway. No one noticed as there are old trolley lines and cobble stones right beneath the tar layer that were keeping the road up as the sink hole beneath was getting bigger and bigger.

Not far from me (NE Ohio) has lots of sink holes because of dissolution of buried limestone and dolostone bedrock.

Downtown Cleveland a few days ago.
