i did the gloam trick, gained 4k MF and activated 2 acts terrorized, hunting 10+ heralds... spent couple of hours.. found jack shit..

But im interested in getting some knowledge on how they work:

If im in an area and get the "you draw the ire of a Herald!" message, ive found that killing a couple more special monsters then i swap area (like go from black marsh into the tower or pit or whatever) can spawn a herald! Like some times isntantly as you go into a new area you get "A herald is hunting you in XX area!"

This looks to me to be the best way to spawn them. Just changing area dosnt work every single time, but every time i get that "ire of herald" message i just go to different areas and they usually spawn in that new area..

Thoughts on this?

When it comes to loot im kinda shocked. One herald of terror dropped 3 unique items (normal lvl items..) but other than that i think i MAYBE found one unique item from the other 10 i killed.. not "great" chances for loot it seems :P

There's a % chance to draw ire every time you kill a champion/unique/boss (including defilers). That increases with playercount. Then there's a % chance to replace the next spawned champion/unique with a herald. You need to explore unspawned tiles of the map, and revisiting areas already spawned won't spawn a herald. Its about a 3 screen radius being spawned around you, hence you won't see the herald as it spawns if you're already in the map and moving one sliver of that circle at a time- but entering a new map can force a huge radius to spawn all at once.
I have a suspicion that ire is tied per-character while that player remains in the game and will hunt that one player and spawn only as that player explores tiles, BUT if you leave the game it hunts everyone and spawns for any random player (including if same player leaves/rejoins- ire will still be active)

ahhh thanks for this! So when i enter a new area and it spawns its just because a champ is spawned close to me

Yes its basically the same idea as how diablo clone spawns, except replacing champion/uniques instead of only superuniques.
It only matters when the game is loading in mobs on newly explored tiles, which is a 3 screen radius and if you're moving its only that sliver-moon shape at the edge of your current exploration, but you enter a new area and a huge amount spawns in at once and each can roll to be replaced
It sure looked to me like P8 also increased the rate of replacing mobs because in P1 I'd have a lot of teleporting around with ire drawn and no herald spawned, but in P8 its virtually instantaneous if I just teleport a few screens and first champion/unique spawns in


also I imagine the gloom trick is a good idea because of how long you'll spend in game / other items you can find, but it doesn't affect chances of sunder dropping does it? Its its own treasure class
still makes sense if you want better chance at high end uniques along the way
