Zerk him yourself, use amp/decrep, or skip and move to next game, depending on which of the aforementioned build variants noted above you decide on.

Another merc choice is ebug wealth. Slower but alot more gold.
And eth crown of thieves with lem.
Ebotd wp is by far the best weapon. But there are other options like eth tomb reaver with lems for more gold.
Few tips: don't forget to hork with your +3 warcries weapons for more item find.
Ideally you want a bit of fcr on your items for the cries. The breakpoints are 9/20/37. Or a tele amy or frw helm if you want to run there faster.
You can pimp your merc with a demon limb and use a bo helm and +3warcry amy on swap in your stash too if you want him to be really tanky.

What does an ebug eth wealth mean?

One without %ed on it. It has more armor.
Like a perfect eth AP will be 1179 defense vs 905 defense on a 15%ed eth one.

the ebug glitch doesn't exist in diablo II resurrected though. it was patched.

Ah ok I didn't realize that. You could just use the highest defense wealth armor he can equip then I guess.
The build is way more fun if you have a stash of random things to swap in and out. Even though wealths slower you can pull some massive gold runs with it on the merc.

How does the gold find work if it's on the merc? Does he need to get the killing blow, or hit it at least once or do most of the damage or what?

My build style is a cry/leap barb only. Merc does all the killing on that style build for extra gold yea.
Depending on your merc level you might be able to go higher than AP armor. Liike a kraken shell, hellforge, lacquered plate etc.
