Yes without a doubt, boarder control, port entry etc. Is a very high priority for any country where its applicable which unfortunately has its cost other countries who don't have as much concern could allocate elsewhere.
I am not certain what the cost benifit of something like current ICE operations will yeild in the end versus just putting the majority of your efforts into bolstering boarders and ports and going full preventative mode. I suppose you still need to carry out operations even just to send the message that we will still be actively operating within the country dispite also bolstering the boarder and ports significantly, but current ops looks pretty pricey and I suspect full cost will be buried into other programs. Criminals no question, if it's some family here working for 10 years actively contributing, not sure the cost benifit on that one. Might be better allocated to just preventive measures.
Growth is slowing (carve out the AI/data center stuff that doesn't directly benefit average person today to get a more realistic picture of growth), AI is replacing people or corps are at least gearing for this replacing to happen over the next few years. With that, high immigration is absolutely a problem as net job creation is already and will continue to plummet. I'm seeing in the hiring we are doing over the last 2-3 months. We have one open post for a 70-80k position and you have triple digits of people applying for these jobs. Literally Columbia grad school people vying to get in and not getting it. Every quitting is now scrutinized with management asking "Why cant you leverage AI do to XYZ" if you try to reopen the req. Team i'm on has shrunk and if i was honest i would anticipate further reductions down the line as they basically tell us to do more with less.
Companies like Amazon, MSFT and many others need to be publicly dragged 24/7 for speaking out of both side of their mouth. They are cutting significant portions of their workforces but simultaneously want to bring in tens of thousands of H1Bs. I agree with you that both parties worship the corporations and tbh i don' that's changing no matter what they say.
It's two buckets of immigrations we are talking about one being illegal/low skill and other being skilled but i think both need to collapse for Americans/Canadians to survive and not have their wages suppressed as you get 2% raises while inflation has easily outpaced that over the last 5 years.
