Batting wise (position aside) he is right around league average. He's still strong defensively, and again he manages the pitching staff as well as anyone still. If they let him walk they would have been absolutely fucked.

Uh last year he was. He will continue to decline. Wanna bet that he will be below average offensively this season ?

He's lost a step but he's still "good" defensively.

He does call an excellent game, but I have a feeling he's going to be an offensive black hole this season.

Last year, which was his worst since essentially his rookie year offensively, he posted a .700 OPS which is by all accounts hovering right around the league average range. Maybe under but not by much, and def not for a catcher.

If he walked, that would be a guaranteed hole in the lineup. Realmuto at least has it in him to come up big, we saw a few months this season in the summer where he played outstanding.

People are throwing a fit but who was going to replace him? The pitchers love him and he still has that cannon. It's more about timing being right after striking out on Bichette and then signing Realmuto. If they got Bichette and then did this everyone would be happy.

They had already had an offer out to JT. People just overreacting from the Bichette news.

I think this team is a lot closer than you give them credit for. Than a lot of Phillies fans complaining give them credit for.

Jayson Stark was recently on talking about how he spent a ton of time around the Dodgers in October. Spoke with a lot of players and front office and coaches. He said the Dodgers "felt like they were lucky to beat the Phillies"

Quote
Jayson Stark yesterday regarding the notion the #Phillies weren’t good enough to be the Dodgers:

“You know who doesn’t think that? The Dodgers. I was around them a lot in October. Had a long talk with Dave Roberts at Winter Meetings. He was telling me how they felt they were lucky to beat the Phillies. They couldn’t score against them. It took a couple of crazy plays, plays that nobody focuses on now for them to win.”

The series was incredibly competitive. Game 1 was decided by 2 runs and was tied for most of the game, game 2 was decided by one run, game 3 was a blowout Phillies win, and game 4 was decided by one run in the 11th inning with that crazy Kerkering error. Phillies outscored the Dodgers in that series 15-13. Just as even of a matchup as you could ask for decided by just a couple of plays. That's baseball for ya though, but the Phillies proved they're right there.

700 ops isnt good stop kidding yourself. Hovering around league avg is suppose to be a positive point?

It's literally the 7th best in MLB among catchers.

I think there were only 1 or 2 catchers in the NL last season that were better lmao.

I know the bar is high considering JT was THE best in the game for years, but even in a regressed older form he's still better than a majority of the league 🙄

Catchers who can hit AND play the level of defense and manage a game the way he can are hard to come by. Phillies strength is their pitching and a catcher is clearly important to that.

So what? 7th best isnt that good, especially when the position lacks top tier for that position. I think its more he got 3 year and 15 mill per

do some research and you will auto win every argument with Sixers. Realmuto is DEAD LAST in OPS among qualified pitchers and thats 9th not 7th. Realmuto was 36th in OPS among catchers, in the low 20s if you remove everyone with less than 81 games played.
Guys like Carson Kelly/Will Smith played over 100 games but didnt have 3.1 pa per game.
There were 4 catchers in the NL qualified and 2 had better overall numbers so he framed it as 1 or 2 might have been better
Realmuto had a lower ops than Agustin Ramirez

He is the 2nd highest paid catcher in 2026-2028 after Cal Raleigh

Its the rb of mlb and guy is happy to have his team paying a premium at those positions
