Hi guys

I’m getting old. I’m sure a lot of you are feeling the same.

My lower back, hips and glutes have been giving me grief ongoing for a while. I tend to stretch, feel good then stop because I get bored / am time poor / it recovery isn’t my priority.

Does anyone have a more enjoyable routine they incorporate into their gym routine aside from “just stretching”

Thanks

I recently got one of those deep tissue massage guns, works wonders on some ugly trigger points I tend to get in my back.

Never was a huge fan of stretching or foam rolling but the gun is something I look forward to.

I tried a bunch but I like physicality and got bored so fast with just flexibility routines.

Just do Vinyasa yoga that has some Yin at the end. As I moved into my mid thirties after powerlifting for a decade my flexibility and mobility was / is shot. I started doing Yoga this past year and my knees are way out over my toes in a healthy way, I am snappy, move well, can hold positions that are more of an exercise for the mind because your head is yelling at you to stop for long periods.

I actually have a subscription for these guys I liked Flo's videos so much and do it 4 days a week in some capacity https://www.bnf.yoga/. Definitely get my monies worth but he has hundreds of free videos on youtube. Cant say enough good stuff for what its done for me. I am still cranking out heavy weights but now I can fully forward fold with my hands on the floor, I can float my feet around a lot easier, side bends, etc.

Go do something like this and report back if you liked it. I wont lie I always duck out on the meditation stuff at the end. You will feel awkward as fuck for the first long while but eventually your body just opens up more and you can just move better. I can not overstate how much this stuff has helped me, especially like you who just can't sit there and do flexibility only. Some days ill blast 30-40 minutes of EMOMS using kettlebells then do a 30 minute routine of yoga. Some other days ill just do 70 minutes + of yoga.

Came here to say my two cents. I’m now leaving and will be trying yoga.

Actually appreciate the good info.

Its a hidden but not hidden gem. Yoga is super popular so its not hidden, but for us who have just lifted, perhaps maybe have some ego, well I never gave it the time of day. Then you go to Youtube it and you type Yoga in the search and its a lot of slower more relaxing videos which have their place, but didn't click with me.

But then you look into it a little more and realize just like lifting there's multiple types of yoga and Vinyasa clicked, its a lot of athletic work doing movements my body previously didn't do much of and it clicked.

I ended up following two videos

One for lower back and sciatica pain (im currently on suitable duties with back pain - some days I’m hobbling around).

I then tried a flow state type yoga which was extremely humbling and made me work up a sweat.

I’ll definitely be watching more of these videos and continuing. After only 20 minutes my lower back already feels better.

Thank you so much for the response!

Good luck man, I was also very humbled, that video I linked was the first one I ever tried of his and I remember getting rocked by the pose called dolphin and that's all I needed to get my ego in check and give it some respect and give it an honest go.
