The elaborate systems of diplomatic alliances and tensions preceding the great war didn't lead to a mechanized world conflict because everyone was itching for it, it was the inevitable result of competing empires running out of room to expand while making vast leaps in naval and military technology. We had statesmen like Oscar II trying to arbitrate international disputes and set up a world order where conflicts could be averted with peaceful resolutions. Now his face is on a tin of fish and the UN is more likely to start a war than end one.
