Due to recent ocean mining explorations, roughly 30% of the life that lives on an ocean's floor is being wiped out.
The mining is in search of rare minerals for our tech toys, e.g. autonomous cars, computer parts, cellphones, Amazon's sorting robots etc...

Aliens or their autonomous tech that explore the universe and which may be monitoring us will find us a curious species for not only taking the life of the animals that we need to survive on (and which are yummy when bbq'd), but that we also take the life of countless organisms that we will not need nor know of.
