Why Infinity is Already Effective:

Infinity on your merc provides:

Conviction Aura (-85% enemy lightning resistance, which is a huge damage boost against lightning-immune mobs and hard-hitting enemies).
-55% Lightning Resist to enemies from the aura (which already significantly lowers their lightning resistance).

The combination of Infinity and your Lightning Sorc is already very powerful because it maximizes your damage output against most enemies by breaking their lightning resistance.

Why Light Sunder Could Still Help:

Light Sunder typically adds additional -75% Lightning Resistance to enemies. If you're facing particularly tough enemies (like bosses or Lightning-immune monsters), Light Sunder might help break their immunity even more effectively.

Here's the breakdown:

More Damage vs. Immune or High Resist Enemies: If you're fighting enemies that are lightning immune, and Infinity's Conviction Aura is not enough to break that immunity, the Light Sunder could work with the aura to apply a more significant penalty. This is especially helpful against high-resistance monsters like certain bosses or other endgame content.

Increasing Effective Damage: For tougher enemies or scenarios where your Merc’s Infinity and Conviction Aura aren't enough to bring their lightning resistance to a manageable level, Light Sunder can push their resistance into the negative range, thus giving your Sorc even more damage potential.

Downsides/Considerations:

Slot Efficiency: You’re already spending a lot of resources on Infinity for your merc, which is usually a high-efficiency choice. Adding Light Sunder into your setup would require extra item slots (either in your inventory or as a charm). This could limit your other item slots for damage-boosting or defensive gear.

Diminishing Returns: If you’re already breaking lightning immunity effectively with Infinity, the extra -75% from Light Sunder might not always make a huge difference. You’d have to test it with the specific enemies you're facing.

Conclusion:

Yes, it can help if you’re fighting lightning-immune enemies or monsters with high lightning resistance that aren’t fully broken by Infinity’s aura.
No, if you're primarily relying on Infinity for breaking resistance, and you feel like you're already doing more than enough damage, then you might not need Light Sunder unless you're really min-maxing.

If you’re feeling like your Chaos Sorc can’t hit those super high resist/immune targets hard enough, try Light Sunder. Otherwise, Infinity is likely sufficient for most situations.

ignore the ai slop above

Yes sunder works first and treats an immune to lightning monster as only 95% light resistant. then infinity also only works at 1/4th effectiveness vs immunes(sundered or not) and with infinitys conviction doing -85, it goes to -17% only

so if a monster has 117 or more light resist and u only have infinity, u wont even break immunity. Add on a sunder, and its automatically 95-17= 78 resist, then all your pierce works(facets, crescent moon, etc)

infinity on ur merc doesnt give ur sorc -55 light pierce tho, it only applies to merc, thats why self wielding inifnity nova sorcs have so much pierce, they get the full benefit of -elr while wielding infinity

Test options in Hell Cows vs the Cow King.

In most cases you won't break the Cow Kings Lightning immunity with your merc + Infinity.... however, you may be able to with a Sunders... oh, some other Champion+ Cows with Lightning immunity may appear and you don't break the Lightning Immunity... funny that.

Simple answer is that Sunders can help, what is it? A grand charm that takes up 3 slots? So what.
