However he was 85 years old when this audio was recorded between LKY and Nixon. <---- You can even omit this part in bold and it still makes sense.

It is clear by that point in time, he wasn't going to win the civil war and reclaim back his seat in the UN.

Now move along. ;)

The context is bringing up Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang… lol they are known for a pretty major long-lasting conflict with the PRC. It’s the conflict I alluded to immediately before the sentence you misunderstood.

If you knew nothing about Chinese history, Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang then you may have an excuse for the misunderstanding. Otherwise it is all right there.
